Happy Monday in New York City, where we take our weather emergencies like Paul Thomas Anderson takes his Oscars: it’s one battle after another.
As you might have noticed, last week was hot. Temperatures rose into the high 90’s and stayed there for the latter half of last week and much of the July 4th weekend, driving residents indoors, straining the electrical grid and turning the sidewalk into everyone’s personal hot dog grill. Saturday’s heat pushed the mercury past 100° before evening storms finally broke it.
Now, the National Weather Service is warning of punishing thunderstorms today and tomorrow that could trigger flash floods and heavy winds across New York City. Rainfall could reach as high as 2-3 inches per hour in certain areas, and officials are warning of downed power lines, fallen tree limbs, flooded roads and major travel delays.
“Please — take this weather seriously,” Mayor Mamdani wrote on X yesterday. “If you live in a basement, be on high alert and make a plan now for where you will go if flooding occurs. If waters begin to rise, move to higher ground immediately.”
During stretches like this, let’s remember the city’s Amazon drivers, deliveristas and postpeople, who continue to haul our 10-packs of dish soap, BOGO burritos and pre-approved credit card mail offers from household to household across the five boroughs — rain, heat or snow.

A new Barrel Yard — combo distillery, winery, cidery — opens in historic Red Hook

The new 40,000-square-foot Red Hook Barrel Yard brings a trifecta of a winery, cidery and soon-to-open distillery under one roof.
Located on Red Hook’s waterfront the Barrel Yard, with sweeping views of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, was created out of the former Red Hook Winery, which was established in 2008.
Barrel Yard co-proprietor Sandra Snyder, who owns the space along with her husband, Mark, called the new venue “a love letter to New York that we have brought to the waterfront of Brooklyn.”
