A rough summer: More mature trees lost in Brooklyn Heights
It’s been a hard summer for street trees in Brooklyn, especially in the Heights. Thursday’s thunderstorm and high winds added to the carnage, taking down two mature honey locust trees on Pineapple Street at Columbia Heights. Flooding and travel disruptions took place across the entire region during the storm — including waterspouts which formed in the Rockaways and Nassau County. Happy Wednesday in Brooklyn, where sometimes, you need to take out a mortgage on your parking space.
On Union Street in Park Slope, a few blocks from Prospect Park and steps from the Park Slope Food Coop, a lovely pre-war brick building offers one of the city’s more unusual pieces of real estate: a spot to park your car. Advertised as “the only free-standing dedicated condominium garage with permanent deeded parking spaces” in Park Slope, the spot comes with full-time attendants, security cameras and elevator access to the street. All it’ll cost you is $250,000, plus $400 extra per month in additional fees.
While some may balk at the price, others see a deeded space as a reasonable investment to supplement a multi-million dollar purchase on a nearby townhouse. Parking in the area can be a major hassle, and owning a space is a major amenity. “It seems like a lot of money, and it is,” the lot’s broker, Alyssa Morris, told The New York Times. “But maybe in the grand scheme of their purchase, it’s not.”
Perhaps more surprising than the price is that there appears to be a market for it. Morris has already sold five spots in the same garage over the past year. One Corcoran broker said she sold 20 spots in another Brooklyn parking garage at a rate of $165,000-$175,000 each. Of course, this kind of money is old hat in Manhattan, where private spots regularly go for half a million dollars or more.

Green-Wood Cemetery hosted “The Battle of Brooklyn 250: The Meaning of Freedom” on Sunday.
The morning and afternoon included music, storytelling and hands-on activities leading up to the procession up Battle Hill, where part of the battle was fought in 1776.
The cemetery was one of six sites that celebrated Brooklyn 250, a boroughwide commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn. It is the largest battle of the American Revolution. The initiative was supported by $350,000 in state funding.
Brooklyn 250 was also presented by the Old Stone House, Brooklyn Public Library’s Center for Brooklyn History, Prospect Park Alliance, Fort Greene Park Conservancy and Friends of Fort Defiance.
“Green-Wood’s Battle Hill is one of the very few places in all of New York where anyone and everyone can stand on ground that has not been bulldozed, reshaped, rezoned or redefined, where history has not been erased, and simultaneously envision the battle for freedom fought over 250 years ago and see the diverse city that grew from it,” said Meera Joshi, president of The Green-Wood Cemetery.
