‘Insane’ Halloween crowds take over Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights
The Halloween scene on typically quiet Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights Saturday night was — once again — over the top, with residents handing out candy by the bushel to mobs of kids and parents.
The one-block strip is known as Halloween Central in the neighborhood, but this year locals said they had never seen so many trick-or-treaters. They used words like “insane” and “unbelievable.”
And we’re back! Happy Monday in New York City, where the New York City Marathon is over, and Election Day is about to begin.
Yesterday, 60,000 brave runners participated in the world’s largest marathon, with crowds of supporters lining the route. Among the finishers was James Thomas, an 80-year-old man who has been running (and completing) the NYC Marathon for 43 years. He was the last man in the race to finish. Thomas announced that this year will be his final run. His mind is fit for another, but his body can’t keep up any longer. But Thomas wasn’t the oldest contestant to finish; that distinction belongs to 90-year-old Marty Granoff from Florida.
Over 2 million people in all turned out to cheer on the runner — a solid mass of humans stretching 26.2 miles across the five boroughs, from Staten Island to Central Park. Among the supporters was Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who posted up near Mile 13 in Long Island City to hand out water, take photos with runners and pass on some words of encouragement.
Mayor Mamdani will also be hitting up the polls tomorrow, no doubt to vote for Kathy Hochul for governor and a number of other progressive democrats in the races for Congress, State Senate and State Assembly, among others. If you are registered to vote in New York City and don’t know where your polling station is, follow this link to find out. NYC Votes has a handy guide to learn about the candidates and their major proposals.
Happy voting!
