Happy Wednesday in New York City, where our most mobile workers finally have a place to rest.
City Hall Park Deliverista Hub opened for business on Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside City Hall. The hub, repurposed from an old newsstand, gives New York City’s 80,000 delivery workers a place to slow down, recharge their e-bikes, work on repairs and chat with colleagues. The Workers Justice Project representatives will staff the hub five days per week to give deliveristas free legal advice. The structure is about the size of two large bus shelters and features two exterior charging cabinets that together can recharge up to 48 e-bike batteries.
The idea was originally conceived by deliverista Sergio Gustavo Ajche. “We hope this is just the beginning, and one day soon we can have many more all across the city,” Ajche told reporters at the ribbon-cutting as he stood next to the battery charging station named after him.
Senator Chuck Schumer originally bookmarked $1 million in 2021 for the project, but momentum stalled under the Adams administration. The Hub became a priority again when Mayor Zohran Mamdani took office in January. It took about two months to complete construction.
“For years, my office pushed and prodded the previous administration, overcoming bureaucratic hurdles, overcoming inertia. People didn’t understand,” Schumer said at the ceremony. “I want to congratulate the new administration, Mayor Mamdani. They moved quickly to expedite the process.”
So kick up your feet, change into pajamas and get cozy, because door-to-door delivery culture in New York City is only getting stronger.
