Happy Thursday in New York City, where this writer feels compelled to address yesterday’s intro.

First, the weather. We mentioned yesterday that snowfall this weekend was projected to reach up to six inches. As of this morning, there’s over a 50% chance that snowfall will double that prediction, totalling 12 inches or more. Experts call it a potentially ‘legendary’ storm. We’re now officially in the stock-up-on-eggs-and-toilet-paper zone.

Then, there was the last line of the intro: “Looks like it’s going to stay as cold as the Knicks’ jump shooting for at least another week.”

At the time, the team was riding a 2-9 losing streak with no end in sight. Not only did the Knicks follow the publishing of that statement with a historic 120-66 thumping of the Brooklyn Nets — the widest margin of victory in the franchise’s 80-year history — but they did so by shooting 57.5% from the field and 50% (!) from the three-point line. For those who don’t follow basketball, 50% is sort of to three-point percentages what 12 inches is to average snowfall.

Longtime readers of this newsletter may know that despite my Brooklyn upbringing, I am a Philadelphia sports fan. The Sixers take on the Knicks this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Let me use my powers of shortsight for good this time, and state plainly that the Knicks will definitely beat the Sixers this weekend.

Now, we let the jinx do its work.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, first officially observed nationally in 1986 when former President Ronald Reagan signed a bill to make it a federal holiday, was celebrated throughout Brooklyn this past weekend.

The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives hosted its annual event in partnership with the African American Clergy and Elected Officials. The event honored King’s legacy on Monday at Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, 11 Sumpter St.

Opening remarks at the NOBLE event were provided by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who referred to King as “a powerful voice for the voiceless.”
