Good afternoon! Ah, the bliss of parking your car and knowing you won’t have to move it for a while, thanks to suspended alternate-side parking. The low-grade anxiety over the following days as you pass other parked cars encased in tombs of snow and ice. The relief of deciding not to worry about it. The quiet sense of security after weeks go by and all thought of parking slips easily from your mind.

New York City car owners have been through it all during the nearly month-long cold snap, but that time is coming to an end. Alternate side parking returns today, meaning hundreds of thousands of drivers will have to finally move their splattered and crusted cars.

It’s a tentative but welcome sign that spring may just be around the corner. A week straight of 40℉ temperatures will help melt the final, stubborn bases of compacted snow that propped up the city’s many dirty street mountains. Where ice and salt once covered the sidewalks, snowmelt now runs in black rivers into the gutters.

Oh — this just in, more snowfall is expected on Sunday and Monday, with predictions suggesting a couple more inches by early next week. I guess our dreams of spring will have to wait.

Tongiht, poet and critic Dan Chiasson will launch his new book, “Bernie for Burlington: The Rise of the People’s Politician,” at Pioneer Works in Red Hook.

In “Bernie for Burlington,” Chiasson details Sanders’ rise from his upbringing in Midwood to become the four-time mayor of Burlington and one of the country’s most prominent progressive political leaders.

In the book, Chiasson explores how growing up in Brooklyn — both buffeted by his family’s crushing financial anxieties and supported by the public services of a New Deal-era city — shaped Sanders’ politics for the rest of his career.
